Calculation Methodology & Sources
My Pay Calculator is designed to make Australian salary and take-home-pay estimates easier to understand. This page explains the financial-year settings, assumptions and official sources behind the calculator.
What the calculator estimates
| Income tax | Estimated from the selected financial year and residency setting using Australian individual income-tax rates and thresholds. |
|---|---|
| Medicare levy | Estimated for applicable scenarios. Actual liability can differ because levy reductions, exemptions, family thresholds and the Medicare levy surcharge depend on personal circumstances not fully captured by a simple salary calculator. |
| Superannuation | Super is editable. FY2026–27 uses 12% as the standard employer super guarantee reference rate unless you enter a different contribution rate or package structure. |
| HELP / HECS | An optional estimate of compulsory study-loan repayments is included when selected. Actual compulsory repayments use repayment income and can differ from taxable income. |
| Pay frequencies | Annual estimated results are converted into monthly, fortnightly, weekly or hourly views for comparison and planning. |
Current and future financial years
FY2026–27: the resident tax-rate setting reflects the legislated reduction of the first marginal rate above the tax-free threshold to 15% from 1 July 2026.
FY2027–28: this future-year option reflects the legislated reduction of that first marginal rate to 14% from 1 July 2027. Future estimates should be treated as planning figures because other thresholds, offsets or policy settings can change.

Assumptions & limitations
- Results are estimates for general information and salary planning, not financial or taxation advice.
- The calculator does not model every deduction, tax offset, family circumstance, private-health setting, fringe benefit, investment loss or payroll arrangement.
- Medicare and HELP/HECS outcomes can depend on income definitions and circumstances beyond the salary figure entered.
- Employer payroll withholding and your final tax-return liability may differ from these estimates.
- Future financial-year settings reflect legislation available at the review date and may require updates if rules change.
